History of Cod Liver Oil dates back to the European cost line in small fishing towns. Fisherman from England, Ireland, Scotland, Newfoundland and Iceland used cod liver oil for a variety of different tasks including feeding animals, textiles, lamp oil and to soften leather. It is said to have been used to relieve joint and muscle pain as well as rheumatism. Fisherman would rub the cod liver oil directly on the aching joints and skin irritations; however, the oil itself takes a long time to be absorbed through the skin. Later on people started to drink the cod liver oil as a foul tonic to get faster results for their aches and pains. While out at sea, it is believed that fisherman would actually eat raw cod livers in order to deter the common cold.
Later on, it was used as a common treatment for rickets, a disease that affects malnourished children. Rickets itself is a disease caused from the lack of Vitamin D which causes softening of the bones in children.
