Cod Liver Oil from the Beginning

Cod Liver Oil has become a hot topic in recent years with its amazing qualities and natural approach in the supplement world. Cod Liver Oil reputation for high levels of Vitamin A and Vitamin D while also containing high levels of Vitamin D and Omega 3 fatty acids make it seem like the perfect combination. In recent years, the focus on Omega 3 fatty acids has dominated the health field.
The history of using Cod Liver Oil dates back to the 1800 on the European Coast line. Though the process in which the Cod Liver is completely different it is interesting to look back at how using Cod Liver Oil as a supplement began. Fisherman use to harvest the liver on cod fish and they were consumed as full livers. It was common practice to consume cod liver as a preventive measure against illness that plagued the fishing communities.

During the 1930s, two American scientists discovered that there was a difference between the fatty acids based on their origin. They research showed that Omega 3 fatty acids, the fatty acids derived from fish or vegetables sources were different from Omega 6 fatty aids which are derived from Linolenic Acids. They originally had Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids lumped together. They believed that both were needed by the body; however, the body was unable to produce them itself.

Omega 3 fatty acids natural consumption has been on the decline since the American diet has switched to fried food. Fried food is high in Omega 6 fatty acids. With this switch in our diets, people have started looking for alternative sources of natural Omega 3 fatty acids to help balance out the diet.

As the years passed, the production of cod liver became more refined. As Cod Liver Oil became more popular as a treatment and supplement companies began to extract the Omega 3 fatty acids from the cod liver. During the 1980’s, Omega 3 fatty acids became being removed from cod livers and turned into concentrates.
Enter modern day Cod Liver Oil. Clinical studies have shown a direct connection to the consumption Omega 3 fatty acids and the development of the nervous system.
