Cod Liver Oil vs Fish Oil

As the importance of Omega 3 fatty acids has made its way into the headlines, it has sparked a new debate. People are now asking questions about the difference between Cod Liver Oil and Fish Oil. However, it isn’t only the differences between these two supplements that are important to analysis. It is crucial to like at all the aspects of both options plus take it a step further and apply each choice to your particular lifestyle and health (including diet and exercise habits).

The one major similarity between Cod Liver Oil and Fish Oil is that they both contain a sufficient amount of Omega 3 fatty acids. Research shows that Omega 3 fatty acids are important in order to help the body combat Omega 6 and Omega 9 fatty acids that are over powering in our current society’s diet and lifestyle habits. Omega 3 fatty acids are considered to be healthy fats and help to offset the dangerous fats (Omega 6 and Omega 9).

When discussing Omega 3 fatty acids it is also important to examine the benefits of Cod Liver Oil and Fish Oil on one’s heart. Recent research has shown a correlation between the benefits of adding Cod Liver Oil or Fish Oil to one’s diet and healthier arteries. Blood platelets are thought to not become as sticky when there is an adequate level of Omega 3 fatty acids in a persons’ diet.  This leads to healthier arteries because it prevents the build-up that would occur because of unhealthy levels of the unhealthy fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are thought to have a positive influence on reducing blood pressure.

Both Cod Liver Oil and Fish Oil contain a substantial amount of Vitamin A. The amount of Vitamin A found in Cod Liver Oil can lead to healthier skin, digestion and better vision.

One of the major differences between Cod Liver Oil and Fish Oil is that lack of Vitamin D in Fish Oil. Vitamin D is derived from the liver of the fish. Cod Liver Oil contains a high amount of Vitamin D which is very beneficial to people who do not have enough natural sun exposure to get their required amount of Vitamin D. It is important to note that a person can overdose on Vitamin D. If a person receives enough Vitamin D through sun expose and current diet, it would be better to add just Fish Oil.
